My very favorite thing about teaching my children at home is that I am able to witness their achievements first hand. My oldest went to Kindergarten and most of the first grade. Some of the more basic things in education I am not responsible for having taught her. However, this is not the case when it comes to my other three children. My other three have been taught at home since day one. The amazing thing is that not only can I say that I was there when these boys took their first step, I can also say that I was their to witness the little light bulb go off when they first learned to read and to write. Oh how I remember how my oldest son was so excited when he finally learned to read. It took him such a long time to accomplish as he has many difficulties in his learning. He started to finally catch on to reading in the later part of first grade. He was so completely proud when Daddy came home one day and he could actually read him a book! My oldest is also the one with the most difficulty in learning his math facts. But again, we were there to see the excitement arise within him when he realized that yes, he could do this! There are many challenging things about homeschooling our children, but I can say that the rewards make it all worth it! I just have to remind myself of that every day!

My least favorite thing about homeschooling can also go right along with my favorite! I love to be a part of my children’s accomplishments and to see them grow first hand; however, there is something very scary about knowing that there is no one else to blame if your child’s education is not a strong one. I have struggled with this pretty much every day of my homeschooling adventure. We have lost time in schooling due to severe illness and moving many times. It is often hard to make up the time and to stay on track. I worry that my children will forever be behind their peers in academics or that they will be under-educated when rated by state tests. But, it is in those times of worry that the Lord will press upon my heart that they aren’t my children to worry after to begin with. They are indeed His, and He has trusted them to me. He is the one who decided that they were the children for me and I for them. He has complete confidence in my ability to be a mom and a teacher to them, or He would not have called me to do so. If He doesn’t doubt me then neither should I. I am accountable for their education, but He is accountable for guiding me through their teaching. Praise the Lord that it isn’t ALL on me!
